Yan was self-taught in musicology and piano. Later, inspired by Herbert von Karajan's visual virtuosity in conducting music, he developed a gestural methodology that he termed as "post-conducting" in many of his works, which appear as an intricate "map" of human gestures and music. He frequently projects these works into the context of nature, urban space and network. His MFA thesis on gestural visual music was published by VDM and available globally on Amazon. His art works have been exhibited internationally at Shanghai Biennial Academic (China), Shanghai EXPO 2010 UN Pavilion, Gasteig Cultural Center (Germany) and RISD Museum (USA). His photography are published in printed and online media globally, including AIA (The American Institute of Architects), PHAIDON(UK), Modern Design Magazine(Spain) and Shanghai Translation Publishing House. Besides, Yan also compose experimental music diligently and co-host one of the largest Chinese contemporary music forum.

statement   I like to call myself A Walking MAN. I enjoy walking around, especially in Music, Architecture and Nature. That is the M.A.N who constantly enlightens me.

Music gives me passion, abstraction and fluidity. I enjoy embodying and translating between music and visual. Herbert von Karajan’s visual virtuosity in conducting music evoked my gestural response while listening. I started playing piano. These long-term practices help me to develop a gestural methodology in many of my works. I called it post-conducting to reflect this approach, which is also extended into gestures in a networked experience.

Architecture teaches me how to read a space and find relationships between spaces. Nature ignites me by its randomness and profoundness. I try to embody all those features in my work. That is the reason I choose digital media, which enables me to create a system rather then a fixed output. With this systematic approach, I can enrich my work with a constant flow of structure, a highly complex hierarchy and a controlled randomness and versatility.

I have been struggling to create works that could dialogue with the M.A.N. who inspires me. I will keep walking.
